Northeast Georgia Health System, North Patient Tower

Gainesville, GA

HKS, Inc., Lead Architect
idea|span, Interior Designer

Northeast Georgia Health System treats a very diverse population based on its location in a small town just south of the North Georgia Mountains and sixty miles north of Atlanta. Due to a substantial amount of growth in patient population, NGHS began plans to expand their hospital in 2003. Both idea|span and HKS were contracted to create a new 7-story, 367,000 SF patient bed tower for NGHS. Construction was completed in 2009.

The North Patient Tower is located northeast of and connected to the existing hospital and features:

  • Radiology center
  • Surgery center
  • Intensive care unit
  • Medical / surgical patient units
  • Chapel, café, administrative offices and support
  • Healing garden
  • Shell space for future growth

While the North Patient Tower was being designed and developed, NGHS asked idea|span to create a new architectural, lighting, finish and furniture standards program that could be applied to both new building and renovation projects. The new standards program was completed in 2007.
